Why Do Hair Extensions Tangle?

|Emanuele Scarciglia

Hair extensions tangle mainly when friction between the fibres increases or when the hair becomes dry, rough or difficult to separate. Hair quality matters, but it is not the only cause: products, washing, heat, sleep, swimming, maintenance and even the location of the tangle can completely change the diagnosis.

A tangle through the lengths is not the same as a tangle at the root

If tangling mainly affects the lengths and ends, common causes include dehydration, friction, product build-up, excessive heat or an unsuitable routine.

If instead a compact mass forms around the attachments, the problem can also involve naturally shed hairs that remain held by the system until maintenance. Without correct separation of the strands, these hairs can intertwine and create tangles around the base.

Why do the lengths become more difficult to comb?

Extensions do not receive scalp sebum in the same way as hair growing from the head. The lengths can therefore lose slip more easily and need targeted care.

Overly aggressive washing, repeated high temperatures, sea and pool exposure, friction during sleep or residue from unsuitable products can increase roughness and friction. Even good-quality hair can therefore tangle if it is progressively dehydrated or overloaded.

Does hair quality matter?

Yes. Fibre structure, cuticle direction and processing all influence how the hairs move against one another. However, it is inaccurate to use tangling as the only test for whether hair is human, Remy or good quality.

An extension can tangle because of several interacting factors, while the term Remy describes cuticle alignment and does not make the hair immune to dryness, friction or poor maintenance.

How to reduce tangling

  • brush regularly without pulling the attachments;
  • detangle the ends first and work gradually upwards;
  • keep the lengths soft without saturating the attachment area;
  • do not sleep with permanent extensions wet or damp;
  • limit heat to the temperature actually needed;
  • rinse thoroughly after the sea or pool;
  • follow the checks and maintenance required by your system.

In the Journal, you will also find guides on how to brush extensions, how to wash them and how to manage them while sleeping.

What if the tangle is already around the attachments?

Do not try to remove it by pulling. If the tangle involves several attachments or a compact area around the root, forcing it with a brush or comb can increase tension on the natural hair.

In that case, it is better to have the area professionally separated and checked and assess whether maintenance has been left too late. Our guide to how often extensions need maintenance explains why the interval is not the same for everyone.

In summary

Hair extensions do not tangle for just one reason. Where the tangle appears is often the first useful clue: through the lengths it mainly suggests a problem with slip, friction or routine; near the attachments, growth, retained shed hairs and maintenance should also be considered. Before changing products at random, identify which situation is actually occurring.
