Short answer: in hair extensions, Remy refers to human hair collected and processed while keeping the cuticles aligned in the same direction, from root to tip. This alignment reduces irregular friction between strands and helps the hair remain more manageable over time.
Simply saying “human hair” is therefore not enough to describe how an extension is constructed. Two products can both contain human hair while having very different selection and processing standards.
Why is cuticle alignment important?
The surface of a hair fibre is made up of overlapping scales. When the hairs within a strand maintain a consistent orientation, these surfaces move against one another more evenly. If hairs facing in opposite directions are mixed together, the surfaces are more likely to catch, particularly after washing, friction and everyday wear.
This is why “Remy” is a useful technical characteristic when assessing an extension that will be repeatedly washed, dried and brushed.
Does Remy automatically mean perfect quality?
No. Remy is an important characteristic, but it does not describe the entire quality of an extension on its own. Raw-material selection, uniformity of the strand, processing, attachment construction, density through the lengths and correct maintenance habits also matter.
Remy is not the same as Double Drawn either: the two terms describe different aspects. Remy primarily concerns hair orientation; Double Drawn concerns the selection of lengths within the strand. We deliberately keep the two questions separate, because mixing them into one definition produces the usual catalogue soup.
