Why Do Hair Extensions Slip?

When an extension slips or loses its hold, the first place to look for the cause is the application system. Tape-ins, micro-rings, keratin bonds and wefts do not attach in the same way, so speaking generically about “extensions falling out” can easily lead to the wrong conclusion.

An occasional single loss can happen during wear. If many attachments begin to move down or detach within a short period, however, it is worth checking the application, the amount of natural hair involved, the products used and the maintenance routine.

Why can tape-in extensions slip?

Tape-ins depend on adhesion between the tab and the natural hair section. Oils, conditioners, masks or other residue near the root can reduce adhesive hold. Incorrect base preparation, an unsuitable amount of hair between the tabs, compromised adhesive or poorly executed maintenance can also contribute.

Timing and aftercare immediately following application depend on the adhesive used. It is therefore more accurate to follow the instructions for the specific system than to apply one universal rule to every tape-in.

Why can micro-ring extensions slip?

With micro-rings, the hold is mechanical. The size of the natural section, the type of ring, correct closure and weight distribution are therefore critical.

A section that is too small may not provide enough grip; one that is too large may prevent correct closure. Very slippery roots caused by product build-up can also contribute.

Natural growth should also be distinguished from actual slipping: over time the attachment naturally moves farther from the scalp because the hair grows. This is one reason repositionable systems require maintenance.

Why can a keratin-bond strand detach?

The keratin point needs to form an attachment appropriate to the amount of natural hair supporting the strand. Base preparation, attachment construction, the proportion between the natural section and extension, and subsequent care all affect hold.

Highly emollient or oily products repeatedly applied around the attachments can interfere with system management. Even here, however, occasionally losing one strand over several months does not automatically mean that the application was incorrect.

What about wefts?

A weft does not “slip” in the same way as a tape-in. The support structure, such as a row built with micro-rings or stitching, needs to remain stable. As the hair grows, the row moves down and should be repositioned at the appropriate time.

When should slipping be checked?

If several attachments lose hold very early, a row moves noticeably, or slipping appears together with strong pulling, pain or root tangling, it is better to have the system checked rather than trying to tighten or reattach it yourself.
