How long human hair extensions last depends mainly on the application method and the growth rate of your natural hair. A fixed installation can remain in place for anything from several weeks to several months, while the lengths themselves may have a longer useful life when the system allows them to be reused.
How long do they last by method?
- Micro-ring: generally requires a check and repositioning every 6–8 weeks.
- Tape-in: normally repositioned every 6–8 weeks.
- Keratin bonds: can generally remain in place for around 3–5 months before professional removal.
- Weft extensions: require periodic repositioning as the natural hair grows.
- Clip-in: there is no fixed installation period because they are removed after use.

Are installation time and hair lifespan the same thing?
No. Installation time refers to how long the system can remain correctly positioned on the natural hair. The useful life of the lengths refers to how long the extension hair itself remains usable and in good condition.
This is why a reusable system may need repositioning after only a few weeks without meaning that the lengths need to be replaced.
What shortens their lifespan?
Leaving regrowth for too long, excessive heat, unsuitable products around the attachments, tangling and poor care can reduce the lifespan of either the installation or the lengths.
